Kara Young

Young, who constructs mixed-media wall hangings from handmade paper, patinated metals, wood, found objects, and materials such as gesso and cement, evolved out of her interest in Nature, and the process of Nature that ages things and shows the passage of time.

Young, who studied sculpture at Ohio State University, first gravitated to free-form sculptural weaving. She then worked in clothing design and construction for ten years before apprenticing with Leo Hobaica, a San Francisco handmade paper/mixed media artist.

Young’s use of recycled components evokes a rustic, weather quality reminiscent of the South-West or Spanish Colonial Mexico, while her use of handmade paper, gold, and copper leaf seems Japanese-inspired.
